Garankuwa Nursing College students give back to community of Atteridgville

The relationship between community members and nurses gets sour almost every day, and the view is that there is a great need to resuscitate it even further.

With this in mind, the Student Representative Council (SRC) at Garankuwa Nursing College brought to reality the link between community and nursing fraternity on 5 March 2015 when they led a group of student nurses who gave back to a community project in Atteridgeville, fostering a caring atmosphere and thus the almost dying rapport between the two.

SRC at the college gets allocated funds each year and source sponsorship and identify a community project that they will contribute towards.  This year they chose Makabongwe Pathways Atteridgville in Pretoria which cares for 30 disabled children. They donated trampoline, special mattresses, carpet, clothes and food to the warm-hearted children. Community members and representatives from community organisations witnessed the event. Organisations that sponsored the event were Danone and Samsung.

Acting Head of student affairs at the college, Mrs Paile, said this initiative will go a long way in forging a strong bond between communities and nursing fraternity, due to tensions which have been escalating largely because of strained resources in health facilities.
