National Learner Movement takes Health Games to Port Elizabeth
Eastern Cape reign supreme in three sport codes
It was the period to remember in Eastern Cape when DENOSA National Learner Movement took the National Health Games to the Friendly city of Port Elizabeth from 3 to 6 December.
Addressing students on the opening of the Health Games, DENOSA National Learner Movement Chairperson, Tshepo Monoketsi, said, as foot soldiers in the fight against escalating non-communicable diseases in the country, nurses ought to be exemplary in taking their well-being as health workers to heart by practicing what they preach to patients on a daily basis in the clinical settings.
About 60 student nurses from each province across the country converged to PE to compete on various sporting codes such as Soccer, Netball, Volley Ball and Egg running.
The games began on 4 December at the Sports Field at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) where Eastern Cape stole the show when they emerged victories on two sport codes on the day. The Netball team was first to win the tournament when they beat Limpopo 16-4 in the finals to take home the trophy.
The soccer team fought it out with the equally strong team from KwaZulu-Natal, which was warm favourites to win the tournament as they had beaten their opponents 6-0 in the quarterfinals and 10-0 in the semi-finals.
However, the KZN team lost on penalty spot-kicks after game ended 1-1 during regulation time, and referee, Tauhlole Masemola, sent both teams straight to the lottery after the final whistle.
