Presentation by Health Minister on NHI at the 3rd SA Nurses Conference:

Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, delivered a two-hour presentation to nurses at the 3rd SA Nurses' Conference at Birchwood Hotel in Benoni on 25 February where he said there are four Highways which South Aafricans are marching to their graves:
HIV - it has about 10 lanes...
High martenal and child mortality
Non-communicable diseases: HBP, Diabetes, cancer,
Injury and Violence.
"In SA we've reached an abnormal situation where we have reached trauma. We are angry. When we are angry we kill. And when we are happy we also kill each other. Check on the good Friday and see.
There must be a significant shift in equity, efficiancy, effectiveness of quality healthcare, which why we have NHI.
'It's not the minister's choice, unlike what many people say out there."
He said the country will be prioritizing NHI.
There are four things that are wrong with public sector, which must be fixed first for NHI to become effective:
Problem of Human Resources
Wrong people appointed in wrong places. That's the biggest enemy in South Africa.
Patronage and cronyism
Poor planning, development and management of HR. In this area, you nurses are doing badly.
FinancialManagement
- Unfavourable Audit outcomes except at National and 3 Provinces
Procurement/Supply Chain
simplest equipment and devices unavailbe or out of order for long periods of time
Absence of most essentical medicia drugs due to corruption
Huge tenders issues for non-essential equipment (wrong choices)
Infrastructure
- Poor or non-existent maintenance of infrastructure
Collapse of essential infratstructure
poor mworkmanship in the construction.
We need to fix these is we are to succeed with NHI, said Minister.
