Nurses unite at 21st International AIDS Conference in Durban
Nurses from all over the world held a two-day pre-conference Nurses meeting from 16 yo 17 July ahead of the International AIDS Conference in Durban where nursing issues in relation to HIV/AIDS were discussed at length.
Issues raised ranged from severe shortage of nurses, shortage of equipment, shortage of nurse educators, and shortage of resources at nursing colleges and the risk of compromising quality of care and quality of nurse cadres that are produced.
The negative impact of these shortages on the attitude of nurses eas equally raised sharply. Nurses agreed that addressing the cause of the negative is the necessary step that must be taken. Speakers narrated instances where they had to care for 50 patients at night alone and with no one to turn to when patients got complicated.
The nurses agreed that, yes, nurses care, but the conditions they work under are pushing them to the limit.
The meeting ended with the call to action which demands that countries to invest in the nursing workforce.
