DENOSA Gender meeting enters day two
Day two of DENOSA National Gender Committee meeting has resumed with full vigour on Friday 18 November at DENOSA Head Office in Pretoria.
Pertinent issues under discussion, include:
The need to push for maternity leave to be full year just like countries like China and the US; and to extend men's paternity leave to at least three months so they provide assistance as well.
The need for government to ensure dignity of girl children by distributing sanitary towels, just like it does with male condoms;
The slow pace of implementation of NHI;
The need for DENOSA to strike a fair gender balance in terms of leadership at all its structures.
Later on, the committee will officially launch the 16 Days of Activism campaign, where it will highlight areas of nursing that can play a role in gathering of evidence in cases of abuse. Forensic Nursing is one such example, which could lead to high conviction rate for perpetrators. Currently, the conviction rate for perpetrators, especially rape perpetrators, is disappointingly low in a country the rate of abuse is quite high.
