Nurses join thousands of workers in commemorating Workers Day
Nurses joined thousands of other workers on 1 May countrywide to commemorate Workers Day where they expressed their feelings about a number of workplace issues that are not resolved in the workplace.
COSATU scheduled a number of rallies in all provinces. The main rally was held Kwazakhele in Port Elizabeth, which was addressed by COSATU President, Sdumo Dlamini, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa, SACP General Secretary, Blade Nzimande and SANCO President, Richard Mdakane.
COSATU Central Executive Committee (CEC) members were deployed in all the celebrations countrywide. DENOSA President, Simon Hlungwani, was deployed alongside other CEC members at the main rally in Port Elizabeth while DENOSA 2nd Deputy President, Thandeka Msibi, and DENOSA Deputy General Secretary, Kwena Manamela, addressed workers in Nquthu in KwaZulu-Natal. DENOSA Acting General Secretary, Cassim Lekhoathi, was deployed in the Mpumalanga rally in Ermelo. DENOSA National Treasurer, Cookie Nkambule, was deployed in the Western Cape rally held in Cape Town.
Some of the issues highlighted during the rallies, which form part of COSATU’s priority campaigns for 2018, included:
► Fight against gender-based violence
► Decent quality jobs
► Recruitment, retention and membership service campaign
► Provident fund/Social security reform
► Living wage campaign
► Banning labour brokers
► Anti-privatisation
► Public transport
► Opposition to e-tolling
► Anti-corruption campaign
► National Health Insurance
► Occupational Health and Safety
