DENOSA Northern Cape condemns assault of nurses at Progress Clinic in Upington and Postmasburg District Hospital

Media statement
Wednesday, 05 August 2015

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in Northern Cape is seriously disturbed by recent assaults of nurses at health facilities in the province and calls for an end to this abnormal behaviour as it can no longer be tolerated.

A nurse at Progress Clinic in Upington was assaulted by a community member yesterday (04 August 2015) in her consulting room, where she was busy rendering the best possible patient care she could give just few minutes before knocking off from her busy day. The nurse has since been seen by a private GP and booked off from work. She sustained some bruises on her face and hematoma to her forehead (DENOSA is in possession of pictures); she is still traumatized and expressed her fear whilst recounting the whole ordeal.

Furthermore, another nurse was also assaulted at the Postmasburg District Hospital, where she was busy rendering patient care.  We call on the community members to take such incidents very serious and ensure that such practices are condemned at all platforms of community gatherings, as they are having a negative impact on the smooth running of health care services.  We take the opportunity to thank those community members who always show appreciation to the work done by nurses despite the circumstances they find themselves in.  These incidents affect the morale of nurses in facilities.

We call on the Department of Health to urgently pay attention to safety of health workers at health facilities. It is about time that security measures at health facilities are strengthened and availability of security personnel at facilities is ensured as required by the Office of Health Standards Compliance.  We will continue engaging the Department of Health on issues of workplace safety as it forms part of our (DENOSA) Positive Practice Environment (PPE) Campaign.
