DENOSA Gauteng calls for total overhaul of whole management at Tembisa Hospital, not just CEO

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in Gauteng welcomes the action the provincial department has made at Tembisa Hospital where a CEO has been put on special leave until 17 August and to report at Central Office on her return pending the investigation, but we also call for the total overhaul of the whole management at the facility as the service quality at the institution has been compromised due to disunity at executive level.  
This decision by MEC of Health in the province, Qedani Mahlangu, follows her meeting with the management of the facility at the back of the recent attack of a nurse and a security guard as well as public complaints about poor service at the facility. We want the management that will be neutral and work together to improve service delivery in the hospital.   
The quality of service at the hospital is a great source of frustration for both health workers and patients, due to constant shortage of resources (both human and financial), equipment and supplies of medication. In some cases, the facility runs short of supplies as basic as toilet papers, and not to talk about other key resources and medication. DENOSA calls on the provincial government consider placing the facility under administration as a short-term solution to the current problems.             
However, the unilateral decision to place only the CEO on special leave, with no consultation with the labour organisations representing all workers at the hospital, is not a welcomed culture of not engaging key stakeholders. 
Coming back to the issue which led to this action, DENOSA notes the apology that the department conveyed to the families of the mother whose sons attacked health workers. Our interest is to find out if the department has any plans to take the concerned workers through programmes that will modify and improve their attitude. 
The severe shortage of nurses in our facilities is leaving the few nurses to work to a point where they experience burnout until their morale wanes and negative attitude gets the better of them. But because of the same shortage in facilities, get denied from attending these continuous professional opportunities.
