DENOSA urges all South Africans to travel safely this festive season, because there are few health workers out there
Media statement
Thursday, 17 December 2015
The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) urges all South Africans who are on their way to their different holiday destinations across the country to drive safely, exercise extreme caution and gest rest whenever possible.
As nurses we are making this call because there are few health workers in facilities that are outside urban cities, as most accidents occur in semi-rural areas. Accidents and injuries are the main cause of the deaths in the country, and this happens often during festive season.
The distribution rate of health workers between urban and rural towns is uneven, and facilities in rural areas get overstretched as workers from towns go home for the December holidays.
Our caution is that there may be fewer health workers at facilities that travelers may be driving around, and this may further compromise your health if you are not driving responsibly and in a manner that cooperates with the laws and rules of the road.
We call on all South Africans who will be driving to check their vehicles properly before embarking on the journey, stick to a safe following distance, abide by the rules of the road, observe and obey warning signs, get some rest every two or three hours of driving, and have sufficient amount of drinking water.
DENOSA wishes all nurses in the country, health workers in general, many of whom will be hard at work during this time, and fellow South Africans a safe and healthy and Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
