DENOSA Gauteng disappointed by Minister’s R700 000 cash award to Mamelodi Sundowns
Media statement
Wednesday, 26 October 2016
DENOSA Gauteng notes with disappointment the R700 000 cash awarded by government to Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club as a token of appreciation for their victory at the OR Tambo International Airport this morning. We think that it very insensitive to spend tax payer’s money recklessly while the country’s universities are burning and students are raising genuine education matters.
We have observed this behaviour of dishing out hard-earned tax payers money easily by the Minister of Sports, who has even ordained himself as “Father Christmas” while he is not generous with his own money but public funds. While we appreciate the fact that Sundowns and other athletes who have benefitted from this reckless spending crusade have done well and represented our country well and must be congratulated, but not with tax payer’s scarce money as public funds must be used to benefit the public and not specific advantaged individuals.
We call on the minister not to recklessly spend public funds unnecessarily especially in this case Sundowns is a wealthy team that does not really need this money, because its president Patrice Motsepe already looks after the team’s financial needs very well. We cannot condone this behaviour while sports development in rural areas and townships is not adequately funded.
Health care continues to be underfunded and the call for Free decolonised education is not realised. It is therefore against this background that we condemn this behaviour by Minister Fikile Mbalula and it should stop. If his department has a lot of money lying around, he should donate those funds to health and education, where they are desperately needed by communities.
We congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns for this continental victory and have no doubt that they will further fly the South African flag high at the world club competition in Japan. They have proven that the indeed ‘The sky is the limit’.
