DENOSA KZN Learner Movement statement on the videorized lashing of a student by Health MEC

Media statement

Thursday, 24 May 2018

DENOSA Leaner Movement in KwaZulu-Natal has seen with greatest dismay the video that is doing rounds on social media where the MEC of Health in KZN is filmed lashing and shaming a student from RK Khan's College of Nursing campus for wearing uniform incorrectly and for a certain hairstyle during what is said to be an "un-announced visit of the MEC" at RK Khans Hospital a few days ago.

We are disgruntled and angered by the MEC's manner in which he addressed a student in infront of trained staff and patients. It is a culture that we are not against that our colleagues must be in a full student uniform when they're in their clinical settings. However, it is very unfortunate and appalling that the MEC is grandstanding with a mere issue of a student uniform when his department is limping from one disaster to the other, let alone failing nurses of this province.

A student might have done wrong for wearing uniform incorrectly, but the manner in which the MEC handled it violated the student's rights and ethical procedures to handle discipline. Perhaps the MEC must be reminded that the contract students signed with KZNCN clearly states that students have no indemnity and, should anything happen to them while on duty, they will not be compensated. The injury on duty card that he pulled was vague.

Therefore, it is for this reason that we call for the MEC to make a public apology to the affected student for such a humiliation.

Since the MEC is starting to show keen interest in how student nurses' issues and their "walk" are handled, we also call on him to invest the same stamina in addressing the dire staff shortage of nurses, crumbling equipment and living conditions in students accommodations.
