DENOSA Mpumalanga to announce the most caring nurse in the province in Nelspruit tonight
MEDIA ALERT
The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in Mpumalanga will be announcing and awarding the most caring nurse in the province with the Marilyn Lahana Caring Award at Nomndeni Lodges in Nelspruit tonight at 18h00.
The award is sponsored and administered by DENOSA in collaboration with the Marilyn Lahana Caring Trust, and the winner is nominated by fellow nurses, patients and former patients as well as community members. The award is named after Marilyn Lahana, a Johannesburg nurse whose act of selflessness and dedication saw her contracting Ebola virus from a patient in 1996. She died soon after. The award is to honour a nurse who has shown dedication to their work by going that extra mile in caring for patients in 2018.
The provincial winner who will be announced tonight will represent Mpumalanga at the national Marilyn Lahana Caring Award in Pretoria later this year where, from nine provincial winners, the overall national winner will be announced.
DENOSA recognises that in recent times nurses carry out their work under extremely challenging conditions, which are highly characterised by severe shortage of staff, equipment and resources generally. And these conditions make the provision of quality healthcare to patients impossible. These shortages often lead to demise of patients in facilities.
DENOSA hopes the commitment made by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week when he announced the economic stimulus to the country will be fulfilled, i.e. to buy beds and critical equipment for health facilities as well as filling of critical vacant positions like nurses among others.
DENOSA believes this move will improve the output of nurses in the workplace while saving many patients’ lives.
Members of the media are cordially invited to attend the Marilyn Lahana Award ceremony in Nelspruit and report.
