DENOSA KZN to force health department to make its decision on community service nurses

Media Statement
Sunday, 6 January 2019

DENOSA in KwaZulu-Natal will take the Provincial Department of Health to court over its failure to absorb nurses who have completed their year of community service into the full-time employment of the department as per the agreement.

This year, the department has not hired a single nurse out of the hundreds of the nurses, who are fully qualified as nurses, despite the dire shortage in health facilities around the province.

DENOSA has, as a first step, approached the department and demanded it makes its intentions clear on whether or not it intends to employ the nurses, which should have been done on 1 January.

If it chooses not to employ them, it must know that it will have to release the nurses from their obligation to pay the department for funding their studies and will forfeit the service of hundreds of nurses.

DENOSA has given the department until 11 January to make its intention known. If it fails to do so, DENOSA will be left with no option but  to approach the court of law in this regard.
