DENOSA Gauteng concerned with laxity in adhering to COVID-19 protocols across the board as the province peaks the 3rd wave

Media statement

Monday, 14 June 2021

As Gauteng province is reaching the peak of the 3rd wave of Covid-19 with by community transmission, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in Gauteng is extremely concerned about the lowering of guard by many people and entities in the province at the time that adherence to Covid-19 protocols should be tightly monitored tightly.

This concern is borne out of the fact that major healthcare institutions in the province like Chris Hani Baragwanath and Steve Biko acamedic hospitals are over the 50% mark of bed capacity, and the fact that delays in reopening Charlotte Maxeke are placing more strain on other surrounding facilities like Helen Josephs and Rahima Moosa hospitals.

In their visits to various healthcare facilities around the province and interacting with DENOSA members, DENOSA Gauteng Provincial Office Bearers have noticed the laxity and in some cases complete stoppage of screening of people before entering healthcare facilities.

In many shopping outlets, the same laxity is being experienced where screening is no longer done, and sanitizers run out at entrances without being refilled timeously. This is concerning to DENOSA as it is contributing to high community transmission which in the end results admissions in healthcare facilities. The low rate of vaccination in the country is not helping either as many elderly and those with comorbidities, including many healthcare workers, still await to be vaccinated.

DENOSA Gauteng calls on the public in the province to go back to the basics of wearing masks at all times, washing hands regularly, and practicing social distancing.
