DENOSA calls for a Positive Practice Environment for health workers in Gaza this Israel Apartheid Week (IAW)

Media statement

Wednesday, 04 March 2015

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) continues to support and endorse the Israel Apartheid Week (IAW) in show of solidarity with health workers who are forced to care for patients under difficult conditions in Gaza and calls for the provision of a positive practice environment for health workers in the area.

DENOSA’s ongoing concern is that the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip has a negative impact in preventing the proper functioning of Palestinian health services and the effective treatment of sick patients.

As a result, health workers and patients are subjected to sporadic attacks in healthcare facilities. Health workers have an obligation not to abandon the sick that, by virtue of their condition, are vulnerable and cannot do anything for themselves.

The sick and critical patients are often prevented from travelling outside of Gaza to obtain the necessary treatment for their illnesses, and health professionals are often prevented from getting continuous professional development through if they are to attend outside of Gaza Strip.

In the age of striving for Universal Health Coverage, the tight restrictions imposed on people of Gaza are a direct opposite of achieving this goal. DENOSA calls for all health organisations to show solidarity with the plight of the health workers in Gaza and put the necessary pressure in calling for an end to restrictions that are imposed on the people of Gaza.

At least the United Nations (UN) has declared apartheid a crime against humanity, and as such health workers and patients in Gaza deserve to work under a positive practice environment (PPE), as called for by International Council of Nurses (ICN).

DENOSA is campaigning for this PPE in South Africa, and would like to see the same in Gaza.
