DENOSA Gauteng response to the State of the province address (SOPA) 2016

Media statement

Tuesday, 23 February 2016

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in Gauteng welcomes the State of the Province Address (SOPA) as delivered by the premier of Gauteng Honourable David Makhura yesterday. We think that the SOPA was consistent and specific in responding to issues faced by citizens in the province. The SOPA gave a full report-back on the progress on promises made in the 2015 SOPA. It is for this reason that we think that Gauteng government is on the right track.

As a health union we are happy with the progress registered on health matters and on the same breath we would like to congratulate and thank all hard working health workers especially nurses who, despite the painful and difficult conditions, continue to service the people. It is through their hard work as foot soldiers that we have made significant progress in the fight against TB and HIV. Without the dedication of these health workers and the political will from government, we wouldn’t be winning this fight.

We are happy that access to and quality maternal health has improved and the life expectancy has increased to an average of 62. We note that Gauteng Health did not get a clean audit in the last financial year and we pledge to work together with the department to improve finances of the department.

With all these positive moves in health, however, we remain concerned that not much was said about improving human resources in health. Currently we have been fighting possible lay-offs of nurses especially community service nurses whereas it is known that staff shortages remain a big challenge and if this challenge is not addressed adequately by both the budget speech of the province and budget vote by the MEC of health it will reverse the gains made in health and the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI). We therefore eagerly await the budget speech.
