DENOSA Mpumalanga practicalises visibility and assesses facilities
As one of the Top Strategic Plan of Winning Members for DENOSA was to be visible and listen to Members’ Concerns, the first week of September 2014 saw a visit by DENOSA National Treasurer, cde Tladi and full time shop steward, cde Phinah Mashile, reports Sifiso Mkhatshwa, regional secretary of Gert Sibande.
There are increasing negative comments about nurses while communities don't have the knowledge about what is really going on in facilities and challenges faced by health workers. We should take it upon our hands to start evaluating the places where Nurses are working. We visited Perdekop CHC and Amajuba Hospital on 2 September. We assess those facilities using a PPE Tool which was developed by FTSS and we proceeded to Winfred CHC, Siyathemba CHC and Nthorane Clinic on the 3rd/09/2014.
On the 3rd September the National Treasurer and FTSS met with members and branch, local and regional leadership of DENOSA at Standerton Hospital Boardroom. This visit has showed us we need to make our members aware of PPE and Clinic as Siyathemba which is not good for nurses to work on was surprised. The National and Provincial Core Standards Teams were around Gert Sibande Region their concern of patients safety, and not nurses’ one, that the clinic does not have Exist Area in case of Emergency, No Standby Generator when electricity shuts down. Therefore our own nurses have to use candles to light, only one PN and nurse at night which they have to cover Emergency, Minor Cases, Maternity Cases.
Some nurses don't get the Housing allowance, and are placed on wrong notches. The infrastructure is the worse of them all as is an old unpleasant building. By looking at the building when you enter, you feel sicker. Nurses can't build clinics or hospitals, but Public Works should and what we see is a disgrace. This visit will assist us as we will sit with PHC Managers and Hospitals to address such issues and after meet with District Director. In the process, we were able to recruit Nurses to join the voice of nurses organisation which is DENOSA.
