Three top selfless nurses honoured at Marilyn Lahana Caring Awards
THREE nurses took the top honours as they took home the top three prizes at the annual Marilyn Lahana Trust Caring Awards at the glamorous gala dinner held at Arcadia Hotel in Pretoria last night.
The awards recognise the outstanding nurses who have excelled in their field of work. Candidates are voted for by fellow nurses, patients and community members based on their dedication and selfless. The awards are held in memory of Marilyn Lahana, a Johannesburg nurse and the first person in South Africa to contract Ebola virus after taking a conscious decision to take care of a patient who was just admitted at Johannesburg hospital from Gabon.
Provincial winners competed for the first three prizes at national level. Modiegi “Didi” Maria Mojapelo, who runs a clinic at Refilwe Bophelo community in Lanseria, Johannesburg, was the overall winner at the awards. She empowers the community into helping itself by holding its hands on the steps to be taken in healing itself. She provides what she says it has become a luxury for other health facilities to do – providing enough quality time to talk with a patient as well as providing spiritual healing to her patients.
