Practicalising PPE campaign in Cape Metropole

DENOSA Metropole region and kliepfontein mitchells plain local under the leadership of Christine February, we visited Hanover park community health centre on the 19th of November 2014. This is the health centre in which our nurses work under unsafe environment due to Gangsterism which is very popular in that area and Western Cape in general.
Our main purpose of visiting the centre was to sell our DENOSA/SAMA positive practice environment (PPE) campaign to our members. Christine February and Patrick Khohliso with some of the regional leaders led the discussion, and emphased on the 8 pillars of the PPE.
The following concern was raised by our members:
1. Longstanding payment of overtime money since last year (2013).
2. Nurses work overtime but if they fall sick during those months, they don’t get their overtime money.
3. Concern was raised by nurses who are assembling the crutches for the patient; they believe this is not within their scope of practice.
4. Trauma nurses are nursing patient on the floor because of lack of cot side’s bed in trauma.
5. Some nurses felt they were not supported particularly one student nurse felt after her needle stick injury the college could of supported her more. Clinically she was not treated as she would of liked there was change of medication and treatment within each institution and no consultation with her or continuity of care
6. One registered nurse has advanced psychiatry but according to SANC she is not registered.
7. Leaders of the region with local leaders walked about in trauma and emergency and maternity departments directly after the meeting to observe the concern which was raised by nurses in the meeting:

Nurses were promised that in January we will bring feedback to them on some of the intervention that we are going to do from the union side.
