DENOSA lead a successful nurses’ march to the Western Cape Provincial Legislature on Wednesday 16 March in Cape Town, highlighting the poor working conditions that nurses work under in facilities in the province.
During the march, nurses raised various challenges that nurses encounter in facilities daily, ranging from:
-
Severe shortage of nurses, support staff and extraordinarily long queues in health facilities in the province;
-
Shortage of medication, broken and non-repaired equipment;
-
Lack of resources (both financial and human);
-
Lack of safety in the workplace;
-
Non-payment of health workers; and
-
Lack of support and continuous professional development opportunities for nurses due to severe shortages.
Led by provincial, regional and local leaders, nurses gathered at Kaizergracht Street (westerly direction), down Darling Street, south on Adderley, west on Wale Street and stopped on Wale Street at the provincial legislature.
