DENOSA General Secretary, Oscar Phaka, addresses nurses at IND in Rustenburg
DENOSA General Secretary, Oscar Phaka, addressed the International Nurses Day commemoration for North West, which was held Paardekraal Community Hall just outside Rustenburg on 12 May, where he emphasized the need for real unity of nurses if they are to achieve common goals as a profession.
This year’s International Nurses Day was held under the theme: Nurses: A Voice To Lead – Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
"I was going to correct the MEC. We are definitely not the backbone of healthcare. Because when the backbone is broken, you are left with a paralysed person. We are the brain cells and we are the nerve centre of the healthcare system.
"Go to any institution and you won't find any student to complete a book this thick. But nurses do!! And they come and tell us that we are not educated.
"We have further drifted apart and not united as nurses. It's high time that we depoliticise our profession. I am nurse, not by default, but by choice.
"It's time we not failed Mandela when he said to us: 'you dare not failed us'.
"Nurses, I am going to plead with yourselves. And I am going kneel down. Stop what you are doing. There is too much professional jealousy in nursing. There is too much Pull Her Down Syndrome in nursing!
"Can we really stop that and support each other? This is the line that as nurses we need to march. We can only achieve our goals as nurses if we are united.
"We are very fragmented as nurses and people are gaining advantage out of that. They even say "let's divide them!"
"Where exactly did we go wrong? It's definitely not too late. We can still fix it," he said.
He said nurses work tirelessly, “and when you go home and you turn on your TV you hear a health MEC shouting: 'I am going to fire that nurse!’”, as if there are no labour laws in the country and without even ascertaining what has gone wrong.
"When there are no medication, it's nurses’ fault. When there is no Panado, I get beaten up as a nurse!'
He said nurses deserves to be appointed in more senior roles within the health set up, because of their expertise.
“We want nurses in strategic positions, because they are capable of doing those jobs. We want nursing directorates, and we want Chief Nursing Officers. and that is not political."
