About Us
The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) is a national nursing association (NNA) and a representative organisation of nurses and nursing in South Africa, advancing the aspirations of nurses and advocating for their growth as both professionals and workers in the workplace.
DENOSA was established on 5 December 1996 after the amalgamation of former homelands nursing association to form one representative organisation for nurses in South Africa, replacing the role previously played by South African Nursing Association (SANA).
We are the biggest body that organises nurses in the workplace, with more than 82 000 members who work in various settings both in the public and private sectors. For any nurse to be a member of DENOSA, they must first be registered with the country’s nursing regulatory body, the South African Nursing Council (SANC), as enshrined in the DENOSA constitution.

To advance the interest of our members as healthcare professionals, DENOSA is affiliated to the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and thus represent South Africa as an NNA where we influence nurses’ interest in terms of policies and laws internationally and nationally.
To advance the socio-economic interest of nurses as workers in the workplace, DENOSA is affiliated to both the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the Public Services International (PSI). As a result of these affiliations, we are able to play a key role in influence socio-economic laws to be favourable to healthcare workers. DENOSA offers a variety of packages as benefits for its members (for a full list click on the ‘Benefits’ tab).
