MESSAGE FROM DENOSA WESTERN CAPE:
………
Comrades, our Dedicated Shop Stewards,
In preparation for the International Day for Decent Work, on Thursday, September 28, 2023, we will convene for the Provincial Shop Steward Council in the Western Cape. This is an opportunity for us to further strengthen our bonds, share insights, and prepare for the October 6th mobilization.
As we approach the International Day for Decent Work on October 6, 2023, I want to salute each and every one of you for your unwavering commitment to the cause of workers’ rights. It is your dedication, your passion, and your tireless efforts that make a real difference in the lives of countless workers around the world.
This year, we stand together, stronger than ever, ready to make our voices heard and our demands known. On October 6, we will embark on a journey of solidarity, conducting 2-hour work stoppages, pickets, and marches to champion the cause of decent work. The themes we rally behind are not mere slogans; they are the essence of what defines our fight for justice and fairness in the workplace.
“Restructuring Hurts Workers” – We say no to changes that undermine the livelihoods of workers. We demand transparency and fairness in any restructuring efforts.
“Privatisation Of SOE’s Destroys Jobs” – Our jobs are not commodities to be sold off. We fight against the privatization of state-owned enterprises that threaten employment.
“High-Interest Rates Contributing To The High Cost Of Living” – We stand up against financial systems that burden workers with high costs, making it difficult to make ends meet.
“End Inequalities” – We are united in our quest to eradicate inequality and ensure that every worker is treated with dignity and respect.
“Stopping Discrimination In The World Of Work” – Discrimination has no place in our workplaces. We demand equal opportunities and fair treatment for all.
“Ban Labour Broking And Casualization” – We firmly declare that labor brokering is a form of modern-day slavery. Decent work means fair pay and job security.
“We Demand A Living Wage” – Every worker deserves a wage that allows them to live with dignity. We won’t settle for less.
“We Demand A Comprehensive Social Security System For All Citizens” – Access to social security is a fundamental right, not a privilege. We demand a system that supports all citizens.
“Stop Undermining Collective Bargaining” – Collective agreements are sacred. They must be respected and implemented without compromise.
“Every Worker’s Right To Belong To Any Organization” – Freedom of association is a constitutional right that must be upheld without fear or favour.
“Municipal Workers To Occupy Political Office” – We believe in the power of workers to drive positive change, even in the political arena.
“Non-Payment Of Salaries And Pension Funds Contributions Is A Criminal Offence” – We will not tolerate any violation of our hard-earned benefits. Non-compliance is a criminal act.
“Education And Training Is A Constitutional Right, Not A Privilege” – Education and training opportunities should be accessible to all, not a luxury for a few.
Let us unite, my fellow shop stewards, for these principles, these rights, and these demands. Our collective strength is our greatest asset. Together, we can achieve the fair and just workplaces that every worker deserves.
Let us march forward with purpose and determination. Our cause is just, our mission is clear, and our solidarity is unbreakable. On October 6, 2023, let the world hear our voices, and let us make history together in the name of decent work.
In unity and determination.
DENOSA WESTERN CAPE.
