GQEBERHA – The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in Eastern Cape will be convening its 9th Elective Provincial Congress between 08 and 10 January 2025 at Mphekweni Resort in Port Alfred, where shortage of staff, poor working conditions and other health issues that affect both communities and nurses will be under the microscope for the duration of the congress.
The congress will be held under the theme: ‘Promoting Organisational Growth Through Innovative Practices Towards a Resilient Quality Healthcare and Effective Member Servicing.’
Joining the delegates from all the regions of the province at the congress will be DENOSA President, Simon Hlungwani, who will deliver the keynote address.
The Department of Health, COSATU, ANC, SACP, and SANCO will also address the congress on Day One on the issues that affect health services delivery in the province and the solutions.
The congress will take stock of the challenges that have characterized the healthcare services in the province, which include:

– Gross shortage of staff in healthcare facilities and non-filling of vacant posts.
– The state of readiness of the province for the National Health Insurance (NHI).
– The continued reduction of funding in health and its effects on healthcare services in the rural province.
– Challenges of access to critical healthcare services in the province like mental healthcare.
– The continued reduction in the number of intakes of student nurses at the Lilitha Nursing College in the recent years.
– The effects of the nursing education curriculum change on both nursing and patients.
The congress will also elect the new leaders to lead DENOSA in the province for the next four years.
