MDANTSANE – Kicking off the International Nurses Week, which begins on 6 until 12 May 2026, nurses from Nkqubela TB Hospital, Cecilia Makiwane Hospital, Nontyatyambo CHC and various surrounding clinics in Mdantsane began the important week for the nurses with an educational walk on Wednesday, 6 May, which included health screening to healthcare workers and members of the public.

This is a build-up activity in the lead up to the International Nurses Day, which aims to underline the critical role that nurses play in achieving positive health outcomes for the communities.

The International Nurses Week will culminate to International Nurses day on 12 May, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing.

Both DENOSA and the Eastern Cape department of Health will co-host this year’s national event on 12 May, at Abbotsford Christian Centre in KuGompo City.

Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi; Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane; Health MEC in Eastern Cape, Ntandokazi Capa; National Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Dr Mirriam Matandela, and many others are expected to join the more than 500 nurses on their day next week.

This year’s event is held under the theme: OUR NURSES. OUR FUTURE. EMPOWERED NURSES SAVE LIVES.
