MEDIA ALERT

Thursday, 11 May 2023.

KIMBERLEY – At this year’s commemoration of the International Nurses Day (IND) event on 12 May 2023 in the Northern Cape that will be co-hosted by DENOSA and the Department of Health, DENOSA will be awarding the Most Caring Nurse for the province for 2023 at the event that will be held at the Horseshoe Hotel in Kimberly tomorrow.

The day will see hundreds of nurses from all districts of the province converging under one roof aiming for the well sought-after annual Marilyn Lahana Caring Award, which is administered by DENOSA, at the event that will be graced by the presence of the MEC of Health in Northern Cape, Maruping Lekwene and Deputy General Secretary of DENOSA, Khaya Sodidi.

The International Nurses Day is the anniversary of the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. Administered by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and its affiliated National Nursing Associations (NNAs) in 136 countries, this year’s IND is held under the theme: Our Nurses. Our Future. The theme seeks to rally governments and employers in all countries to value, protect, respect and invest in nurses for the sustainable future of nursing and to turn around their healthcare which has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Northern Cape is the hardest hit province in the country as it suffers gross shortage of nurses. The province’s healthcare system is holding by the shred of few nurses who are going beyond their call of duty to service the patients and communities under the challenging conditions that are worsened by the continued reduction in budgets. The nursing college in the province has not taken new student nurses in three years.

Members of the media are invited to attend the commemoration and report.
