MEDIA ALERT.

MONDAY, 11 DECEMBER 2023.

PRETORIA – With the country having registered commendable health outcomes in various healthcare service areas for the year, South Africa’s Most Caring Nurse for 2023 will be announced and awarded with the Marilyn Lahana Caring National Award and prize money by DENOSA on Wednesday 13 December 2023 at an evening Award Gala Dinner to be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria.

DENOSA administers the Marilyn Lahana Caring Awards annually in both provinces and nationally, in recognition of the nurses who have gone that extra mile in their call of duty in showing dedication, commitment and selflessness in patient care.

The awards are held in conjunction with the Marilyn Lahana Caring Trust and are named after Marilyn Lahana, a Johannesburg nurse who contracted the Ebola virus while caring for a patient who had contracted Ebola from Gabon. She died a few days later in 1996. The Awards are held in remembrance of her selflessness and total dedication in line with the nurses’ pledge of service.

Nine provincial winners will be vying for the top honour in Pretoria where the overall winner will receive an award and prize money of R10 000. The first- and second- runners-up will take home awards with the prize monies of R5000 and R3000 respectively.

Members of the media are cordially invited to the evening Gala Dinner to report.

BACKGROUND:

Once again, nurses have proven this year that their nursing excellence can lead to prolonged life for patients, if well supported in their work. The country administers the world’s biggest HIV management programme, the Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART) programme that is nurse-led, with 7,8 million people who are HIV+ on the programme. The results are a cause for a smile. This ensures that patients live longer and are more active in the country’s economy.

Of the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets for countries by year 2025, South Africa is very close to reaching its target with the current performance score of 90-91-94 (meaning out of the total number of people who are HIV+ in the country, at least 90% of them know their HIV status; and of those who know their status, 91% of them are on the ART programme; and of those on the ART programme, at least 94% of them are virally suppressed).

Similar excellence in other healthcare areas can also be apportioned to nursing excellence although resource-constraints are a constant challenge in the country’s healthcare facilities.

During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the nurses proved yet again how resilient the healthcare system was as more than 40 million South Africans were vaccinated, and the country registered a commendable and excellent recovery rate as majority patients were rejoined with their families after admission.

End.
