JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in Gauteng wishes to make its position clear on the suspension of the CEO of Tembisa Hospital, Dr Ashley Mthunzi, and the CFO of the Department of Health, Ms Lerato Madyo.

Our position statements and policies are clear in that we stand fundamentally opposed to corruption therefore in this case we remain consistent and nothing changes. We support and welcome the investigation as it will enable all parties involved to deal with this matter as facts will be uncovered. We want to remind everyone that this situation is now of international interest and therefore a thorough investigation is critical and must be expeditated for the sake of all involved parties and in the interest of justice.

We have long called for the removal of the incompetent CFO, Lerato Madyo, and this was also highlighted in the Memorandum of Demands that DENOSA submitted to the Department of Health in its provincial march on 20 July this year.

It is part of procedure for the employer to precautionary suspend or transfer an employee if there are serious allegations of misconduct against them and to give credibility to the investigation in that the employee is precautionary suspended so that they cannot influence or hinder the investigation.

We have always spoken out against corruption, and as a matter of principle we welcome any interventions that seek to investigate any corrupt practices within the Department of Health.
