Celebrating 27 years of uniting nurses

North West province celebrated IND on the 12 May 2023 at the Sun City City Bowl, in the Bojanala District

It was a special day to remember for the nurses of the North West province on 12 May 2023 at the Sun City City Bowl, in the Bojanala District, where the International Nurses Day was commemorated by no less than 900 nurses from all districts.

This year’s theme for IND is: Our Nurses. Our Future.

The event was addressed by the President of DENOSA, Simon Hlungwani, and the MEC of Health , Madoda Sambatha.

President Hlungwani emphasized the importance of a proper plan by the government to strengthen the resilience of the country’s healthcare system.

This, he explained, could be achieved through hiring of nurses, increasing the production of nurses every year, ensuring that nurses are allowed to practice within their full scope and through close collaboration between the government and the National Nursing Association, DENOSA, at the country-level.

He also called for the hiring of the 20 000 nurses who remain unemployed in eight provinces at the time the country experiences a gross shortage of nurses in facilities.

He expressed a concern over the lack of action to address the future crisis that the country is faced with in the next five to 15 years: the retirement of almost half the nursing population due to age.
